Lions could miss out on manager target

Millwall’s search for a new manager is reportedly close to ending with interviews taking place this week.

Gareth Ainsworth, Gary Rowett and Adam Barrett are the three names under consideration for the vacant position.

However, Sky Sports have reported today (16/10/19) that a source has told them that Gareth Ainsworth is likely to remain at Wycombe and guide the club through a period of new ownership.

At the time of writing the Wycombe boss remains the favourite with Sky Bet (1/1), with former Stoke, Derby, Birmingham and Burton boss Gary Rowett second at 3/1.

It was reported on Monday that Millwall had approached Wycombe for permission to speak to Ainsworth who has been in charge of the Chairboys since since 2012 – guiding them to promotion from League Two and this season leading them to second in League One. The Adams Park club have said they will not stand in their manager’s way if he expresses a desire to move on.

The clubs perspective new owner does hope the 46 year-old stays at the club but has a plan if he decides to move on.

It was revealed on Monday that the Lions had narrowed their search down to three candidates. Gary Rowett, Ainsworth and current caretaker manager Adam Barrett who will take charge of the team for this Saturday’s game against Brentford at Griffin Park. That game could also be crucial in the deciding of who the next Lions boss will be with Barrett on the three man shortlist.

Millwall have remained very tight lipped throughout the process – saying only they will take their time on deciding who the next manager will be.
