Birmingham City striker ‘on the verge’ of completing pre-contract summer transfer

A report from the Evening Times has claimed that Scottish Premiership side Rangers are “on the verge” of completing a sealing a pre-contract agreement for Birmingham City striker Greg Stewart.

Birmingham City striker Greg Stewart is close to completing a pre-contract transfer to Scottish Premiership side Rangers, a report from Scotland has confirmed.

Stewart’s contract at St Andrew’s runs out at the end of the current season and clubs have been eyeing up a move for him on the cheap. Fellow Championship side Derby County were reportedly interested in possibly securing his signature, but it seems that Rangers are set to beat the Rams’ to the striker.

It was reported last week that Stewart had held talks with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard and talks have progressed since then, bringing a potential deal into fruition.

Stewart has spent the 2018/19 season on loan in Scotland, joining Kilmarnock on loan for the season before cutting short his spell with Killie to rejoin Aberdeen – who he had spent the 2017/18 season on loan with. Over the course of the first half of the season, the 27-year-old was in strong form, bagging eight and assisting seven goals in 16 games.

However, since rejoining Aberdeen, he has failed to appear on the scoresheet in 12, providing just one assist along the way.

Prior to this season, Stewart has spent the majority of his career playing in Scotland. He played for Cowdenbeath and Dundee before joining Birmingham City in August 2016. However, he played 22 games for the Blues, failing to find the net once before being shipped back to Scotland on loan with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.
