Ipswich were last a Premier League side in 2002 and have therefore ended a 22-year wait to return to the big time.

Musical superstar Sheeran, who has sponsored the club's shirts since 2021, is a huge fan and was spotted at the East Anglian derby against Norwich.

And despite being in the United States to perform at this weekend's Miami Grand Prix, he still took to the opportunity to congratulate the squad for their promotion.

In a video on Instagram, he explained how the time difference meant he was up at 7am in Florida to watch his club on TV.

Sheeran watched the match in what was seemingly the lobby of his hotel with three other Ipswich fans he met on Friday.

"I wish I was there," he could be seen saying before they all celebrated at the full-time whistle.

Although the jubilant scenes at Portman Road had just started, Sheeran was able to FaceTime the squad when they were in the dressing room chanting: "We are going up, say we are going up!"

He was then asked where he was but said he's back on Wednesday before asking: "Do you guys want to go out?"

This was met with a confident 'Yeah!', with Sheeran then saying he'll be in touch to help organise their celebrations.

The hit-maker also gave a cheeky explanation for why he wasn't there to enjoy the scenes in person, saying: "I've got to pay for the sponsorship somehow!"

Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson both scored for Ipswich to seal their win over Huddersfield and confirm their return to the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna's side have now completed back-to-back promotions having finished second in League One last season.

They will join Championship winners Leicester City in the top flight along with the play-off winner out of Leeds United, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich City.
