Ebou Adams scored his first goal for Derby to boost their automatic promotion hopes with a win over Blackpool.

Derby went with an attacking formation but the first clear chance fell to the away side in the 29th minute, with George Byers scuffing a shot wide from 15 yards.

It brought an instant response from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, whose curling shot was touched behind by Daniel Grimshaw and the corner was almost forced in at the near post.

But Grimshaw could do nothing in the 40th minute when a cross was half cleared to Adams, who scored with a quality first-time shot from the edge of the area.

Derby should have added a second in the 55th minute when Mendez-Laing put Conor Washington through on the right but he failed to beat Grimshaw.

The Seasiders almost took advantage in the 71st minute through a Sonny Carey free-kick which Rams keeper Joe Wildsmith clawed away.

There was another late scare for the Rams when Kyle Joseph twice had goalbound shots blocked by Curtis Nelson and Eiran Cashin.

A great man once said “This is a football town” How right he was. 30 thousand in attendance again today is a magnificent effort from the fans. As Nige alluded to earlier in this thread, it wasn’t as exciting as the great man’s team but at this stage of the season three points and a clean sheet is the name of the game. COYR 🐏

As a grumpy posh fan that's just confirmed the top 2 after today, but to be fair a team of Derby size shouldn't be in league 1 like Portsmouth either. All the best in championship I hope we follow you there but after today I hold low hopes.

Not the best performance but at this stage, it's points, not pretty that matters. If I were Bolton I'd be looking at that goal difference with a bit of trepidation - 7 is a lot to pull back at this stage. Still a nervy finish to come... Last game of the season anyone??

Derby are in second place for a reason. They have secured the points and deserve it. You think Pompey will be saying its only Derby, of course they won't. You reep what you sow.

Got to agree Michael. Pompey and Derby are 1&2 for a reason. Tuesday is more like a title decider, with Derby having to win to have any realistic chance of the title. Pompey in irresistible form, and at FP will be hard to stop. Expect the final table to look not too different to how it looks today.
